The King of gods, Zeus, supports proper hospitality. â€Å"Zeus of the Strangers guards all guests and suppliants: strangers are sacred—Zeus will avenge their rights! † (Odyssey, 9. 304-5) The encounter between Odysseus and Polyphemus, also known as â€Å"the Cyclops†, showed a great example of poor hospitality when Odysseus and his men were guests in the giant’s lair. Good hospitality and etiquette were explained well by Nestor in The Odyssey, Book 3. It was a teaching moment between Nestor and Telemachus about the proper guest-host relationship. He taught Telemachus to respect his elders, give libations to the gods, and that guests should be fed first, questioned later, and assisted along their journey. Odysseus arrived at the land of the Cyclops, and had prepared a goatskin filled with wine to bring along. We Cyclops never blink at Zeus and Zeus’s shield of storm and thunder, or any other blessed god— we’ve got more force by far. (Odyssey, 9. 306-11) Upon returning to his lair, Polyphemus was angry, and ate 6 of Odysseus’ men. In return for his gift of wine, Polyphemus offers to eat Odysseus last of all the men. (Homer, 1996). Polyphemus’ â€Å"gift† was not a fair trade to the men. A proper guest/host relationship was t o be very welcoming. Expected practice would begin with first offering food and drink to a guest prior to questioning who they are, and from where they travel. The host is expected to provide entertainment and dine with them as well. Polyphemus showed a very poor example of good hospitality in this aspect, as well. Upon returning to his lair, he immediately asked the men who they were, where they came from, and accused them of being pirates. He made no offering of food or drink. Polyphemus also drank all of the wine, failing to share in the dining and entertainment of his guests. (Tracy, 1990). He did not provide entertainment or good company to his guests. Instead, he bashed their heads and ate them for dinner. Prior to enjoying food and drink, it was expected to pray and make libations to the gods. Odysseus and his crew did this prior to helping themselves to the giant’s food, showing good hospitality and etiquette. Polyphemus, however, voiced no fear of the gods, and enjoyed his meal (of Odysseus’ men) without making any type of offering or sacrifice. He did this immediately after learning where the men travelled from, and how they ended up on his island. After enjoying food and drink, learning about their guest and where they have travelled from, a host is expected to meet their guests’ needs and send them along their journey. This may include clothing, shoes, a bath, and even transportation. A host is also expected to respect a guest’s wishes, such as their desire to leave. Polyphemus provided none of these to Odysseus and his men. He killed the men and ate them. He kept them hostage in his lair with no way to escape. He would not allow them to leave at their own free will. Odysseus and his men were forced to risk their lives for freedom. (Homer, 1996). Odysseus was not the most well behaved guest in the home of Polyphemus as well. Odysseus was dishonest (initially) about his identity. This trickery was all part of his plan for escape. He was not acting as a stranger is expected to in another’s home, because he was secretly plotting against his host. Although it was necessary for their survival, he took advantage of the giant’s poor linguistic knowledge by giving him the name â€Å"Nobody†. The Cyclops could figure out the truth behind Odysseus’ trick name. (Brann, 2002). He did bring a guest-gift of vintage wine in a goatskin sack, but this gift was ultimately used to obtund the giant. Polyphemus became very drunk, and Odysseus took great advantage of his altered state, and blinded him with a burning stake. This was very poor stranger etiquette, as he severely injured and disabled Polyphemus. When he robs Polyphemus of his vision, the Cyclops’ father Poseidon is very angry. This ultimately leads to Odysseus’ punishment – a long journey home. â€Å"†¦let him come home late and come a broken man—all shipmates lost, alone in a stranger’s ship— and let him find a world of pain at home! † (Odyssey, 9. 592-5) Even though Odysseus was not the ideal guest, I feel as though he did not deserve this punishment from Poseidon. Odysseus was simply protecting himself and his crew from ultimate death, and Polyphemus was disobedient to the god Zeus with the treatment of his guests. After blinding the Cyclops, Odysseus and his crew were forced to sneak out of the giant’s home. They were not able to leave at their own free will, as a guest should be allowed. Once outside the cave, Odysseus revealed his identity to the giant, showing him just how much he had been fooled. The giant became even more enraged, and again made their departure much more difficult by hurling large boulders towards their ship. Odysseus reminded the giant of his poor hospitality, and of the laws of Zeus, god of guests and strangers. â€Å"†¦Your filthy crimes came down on your own head, you shameless cannibal, aring to eat your guests in your own house— so Zeus and the other gods have paid you back! † (Odyssey, 9. 532-5) Odysseus stated here that Polyphemus received his punishment for poor hospitality in his loss of vision, which I believe was well deserved for eating his own guests. Many people think differently about the show and the pageants. Some are all for the pageants and some are against them. People who are against the pageants complain that they should be eliminated because they exploit children and place them in harm’s way. They claim because of major dangers; no one under the age of eighteen should be placed in a beauty pageant. The children who are in the pageants are dressed up in adult’s clothing, have piles of make up on, and are harming their bodies. They are harming their bodies by putting the make up on and tanning. By putting make up on at such young of an age, their face ages faster. By tanning, they begin to get that urge that some adults have to tan, which makes their skin age and have wrinkles early. It also puts them at the risk of having skin cancer at an early age. They say it also appeals the children to sexual predators. When a child is half naked on stage and sometimes on TV, these sexual predators see them and may even try to meet them. Sexual predators are only part of the problem. Studies show that every child who may benefit from the competition, hundreds of others suffer damage to their self-esteem and have warped self-vision of themselves and their bodies. Many times, they use JonBenet, a young child who competed in these pageants at the age of six. She was murdered in the basement of her home by a sexual predator. The suspect claimed he became aware of her by the pageants being on television. People who are for the pageants and the TV shows claim that it brings their children fame and confidence. When a child has worked hard on a routine and they get on stage and accomplish it, there is no better reward than the applause and praise from the audience and family. Some also say that the tanning and make up does not harm their skin, it just makes them feel prettier. Someone once told me that when a person looks at themselves in the mirror, and they have their hair and make-up done, they feel better about themselves. That is what many moms claim their children feel whenever they have their make-up done, outfits on, and hair done. The Many Meanings of The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky Stephen Crane's "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" is a tale about a town sheriff, Jack Potter, who is returning home from a trip where he has married. Jack returns shamefully with his new wife of little worldly experience. The town of Yellow Sky knows Jack as the fearless Marshal who is never afraid to stare down the barrel of a gun. Jack's return to Yellow Sky happens to be at a time when the town drunk, Scratchy Wilson, is looking for a gunfight. However, the townspeople and Scratchy are disappointed to find him married, unarmed, and unwilling to fight. Before Jack arrived the townspeople were hoping for his arrival to cool off the situation. As one bartender said, "'I wish Jack Potter was back from San Anton', he shot Wilson up once--in the leg--and he would sail in and pull out the kinks in this thing'" (215). This quote and Jack's shamefulness are what leads people into discussions of this story. Jack Potter's marriage was kept secret from any of his friends and family, so his new wife was something unknown to anyone. For this and other reasons, Jack is afraid to return to Yellow Sky a married man. As critic Eric Solomon once put it: "He is condemned in his own eyes for betraying two traditions: he has tarnished the person of Marshal, a figure fearsome and independent, and he has tampered with the custom of partnership--he has not consulted his male friends" (136). Marshal Jack Potter no longer feels the thrill of being Marshal Jack Potter because of his new engagement. Jack is afraid he will lose his reputation that the people of Yellow Sky revere him for. Stephen Crane sets the story well because he allows the reader to understand the tw... ...d to be seen as by the people of Yellow Sky was as an ordinary man. Instead of being a heroic figure comparable to John Wayne, Jack Potter is now comparable to the a kind of man one would categorize as ordinary. Crane's fabulous depiction of the rise and fall of small town marshal is one of beauty. Jack Potter is seen in Yellow Sky as a person that one dreams of being, a wild-west hero that one idolizes. What do you think the mall should do to improve its performance? According to the textbook, the retail life cycle consists of the introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. (Perreault, Jr. Cannon, & McCarthy, 2011) To keep a local suburban regional shopping mall from reaching its decline, one must spend time and money during the maturity phase to keep with today’s trends. If a mall is declining, a manager must get more department or anchor stores to draw in business. Fill other spaces with specialty stores, offering products that consumers can’t get anywhere else. Another option for managers is to find a niche in the community that will draw consumers in. A suggestion that was used in the book was to add entertainment to the center of the mall.The entertainment can be anything from holiday shows, occasional concerts, a playground for kids, or even just an open area with comfortable resting spots where customers can relax and de-stress.
